ABOUT PAUL DENNEY

Paul 1.jpg

“Well Denney, my colleagues and I believe you have got something of a talent”.

These were the immortal words of Paul’s teacher when he was 15 years of age. They were swiftly followed by “let’s hope it emerges before you reach pensionable age!”

Over many years, this ‘something’ has been realised in the world of the arts and alongside a successful career working in some key North West businesses, Paul has used his singing and acting talents throughout this time, at both amateur and semi-professional levels and has performed on many stages across the region.

Paul says: “I feel so fortunate to have discovered the ability to paint and the benefits it brings.  I love painting – not just for my own enjoyment, but because I can share the end results with others too. Also, because I have witnessed first hand the extraordinary talents and dedication of the staff on the children’s wards at Alder Hey Hospital, a percentage of the proceeds from the paintings goes to support their fantastic work”.

Besides pencil drawings, Paul paints predominately in water colours, water pencil, gouache and occasionally in acrylics. He loves to paint landscapes, animals and some contemporary art, but so far has steered away from abstract painting. His preference is to paint something real, recognisable and understood. He has also undertaken painting commissions of pets, buildings, or known landscapes. He has a particular liking for autumn colours - yellows, golds, browns purples and reds. Warm colours that make most scenes glow.

However, more recently another hidden talent has emerged. His abilities in painting were fully realised when he attended an art class at a local studio – a retirement gift from Paul’s family. This proved to be a pivotal moment in Paul’s life – and a fortunate discovery for the rest of us.

With the help and talent of his late art teacher, local artist John Hassall, Paul took to it like a duck to water and within two years won the ‘People’s Choice’ at two open art exhibitions. He has also exhibited his paintings in galleries and sold pieces of his work to the public.
